Why do people experience cognitive decline as they age?

Age-related cognitive decline is normal and usually occurs gradually. As you age, a combination of factors affects your ability to interact with the environment as you used to. Your senses – mainly vision and hearing – begin to weaken, the signals they send to the brain slow down, and your brain's information processing slows down as well. Those are the main reasons for the typical cognitive decline that begin for most people in their 50’s and 60’s.

How does the CogniFit assessment work?

One of the things that makes CogniFit brain fitness programs unique is our ability to create a personalized training program for you, which is based on your performance in the assessment phase. This initial assessment takes about 45 minutes to complete as it measures your performance on 14 cognitive abilities. The abilities are: Eye-hand Coordination, Short-Term Memory, Visual Scanning, Divided Attention, Reaction Time, Awareness, Inhibition, Time Estimation, Shifting Attention, Visual Perception, Spatial Perception, Naming, Working Memory, and Planning.

What happens to my brain as I age?

Scientists have been gathering evidence about the consequences of normal aging for years. By following groups of people for extended periods of time, they are able to compare the cognitive capabilities of many individuals over many years. These studies show that normal age-related cognitive decline affects the speed but not quality of our mental functioning. In other words, as we age we tend to perform everyday cognitive tasks more slowly that we did in the past but our accuracy does not necessarily decline. And not all cognitive abilities are affected by age.

What are my key brain functions and how many are there?

Cognitive science is a very wide area of study and cognitive scholars conduct research in many areas. Traditionally, the main areas of interest for cognitive scientists are attention, perception, memory, motor control, learning capabilities and language processing. Each of the domains described above can be separated into smaller units. For example, in the field of attention we can analyze your ability to divide it, shift it, and focus it. In the field of memory we can study long-term memory, short-term memory and working memory.
