I am a final-year student from the Bachelor of Health and Fitness (Honours) program at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perlis Branch. I am currently conducting a research study titled “Problematic Social Media Use, Inhibitory Control and Academic Performance among University Students.”

You are invited to participate in a research study that aims to evaluate the relationship between social media usage on inhibitory control and academic performance among university students. This study was conducted to understand how social media use can affect inhibitory control and academic performance, especially for university students who need to focus on upcoming exams.

Inhibitory control will be measured using the CogniFit application via Online Computerized Test Using PC. The CogniFit inhibition of return (IOR) test is a digitized replica of the homonymous task (Posner & Cohen, 1984). This task allows the assessment of the phenomenon known as "inhibition of return", which consists of people responding more slowly to stimuli located in the position where at least 300 milliseconds before a task-irrelevant stimulus was shown. Participants will press the left arrow key as soon as the left circle lights up green and press the right arrow key as soon as the right circle lights up green and ignore all the other visual stimuli.

Today, you will be playing brain games on your smartphone, laptop or desktop computer using a program called Cognifit Cognifit is a validated digital assessment tool that measures various brain functions like memory, attention, and coordination. 
  • Brain games will then be played TWICE in this study, once at Baseline (before you start taking the study product) and once at the end of the study.
  • Timing. Do your brain games when you are feeling alert and refreshed at baseline and at the end of the study.
  • Duration. These games should take you approximately 45 minutes. It is important that you complete the entire assessment without significant interruptions and finish in one sitting.
  • Preparation: Ensure you are well-rested. If you use corrective lenses (glasses) or hearing aids, please wear them.
  • Avoid Interruptions. Close your door. Ensure you will not be interrupted or distracted during these games.
  • Do Not Disturb: It is vital to enable "Do Not Disturb" or "Focus Mode" if you opt to use your phone. An incoming text or call during a timed 3-minute task can void the results for that section.
  • Need to take a break? You can pause the assessment between tasks and resume a little later from the same point. Please note that it is not recommended to pause mid-task, as progress within that task may be lost.
